Local Missions

For Edgewood Baptist Church, reaching the world for Christ starts right outside our door. We don’t have to go far to find the lost - on a given Sunday morning, only 15 percent of adults in our city attend a Bible believing church. We recognize we must go to them and tell of the love of Christ in both word and deed with a creative outreach of ministry evangelism.

Some of the opportunities in this section are unique ministries of Edgewood Baptist Church, while others belong to Great Commission Christians with whom we partner. All of them are designed to give practical help to those who are in need, and in doing so provide a doorway for sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ.

There are several branch offices of the Mission Columbus project, but the “central” facility came into being with a lot of help from Edgewood Baptist members and provides the primary means for our outreach into the local community.

Volunteers in the benevolence ministry serve on the “front lines” to provide counseling, personal evangelism, clothing, food and even small appliances to needy families in Columbus – or they can serve “behind the lines” in preparing those materials for distribution. In addition, there’s also a clinic providing free medical and dental assistance, a crisis pregnancy center branch office, ESL training, life development classes, a computer lab and employment assistance – all in a Christian environment.

Follow-up visitation is a key part of the outreach, building relationships in our community with a goal of developing church planting opportunities to reach the “un-reached people groups” of Columbus.

Home Delivery Meals

Every weekday, members of Edgewood Baptist Church deliver hot lunches to elderly, sick or shut-in residents of Columbus. Meals are given where they’re needed without regard for race, creed, or church membership.

The meals are prepared by the local government Enrichment Services Program so all that’s needed is to pick up the lunches from their kitchen and bring them to those in need – along with an encouraging word and the love of Christ. Someone who delivers a home meal may very well be the only visitor the needy will have.

Volunteers deliver meals to a specific route one day a week.

Georgia Baptist Children’s Home

This is one of the oldest and largest child care agencies in Georgia, serving hundreds of hurting children and broken families each year. We work to support the Palmetto Campus Residential Program by collecting and donating supplies such as paper products, laundry detergent, etc. and by participating in the annual CBA Work Day where we labor to clean, paint, and repair the cabins and provide landscaping services.

Faith Based Family Foster Care

Each year there are over 14,000 children in Georgia who need foster care with only 4,300 homes available through state agencies. The Governor of Georgia has asked the Georgia Baptist Convention to act as an agency to help meet the need by opening the hearts and homes of Baptist families. In addition to our own foster homes we hope to assist with respite care, transportation, financial aid for clothing, Christian school tuition, etc.
